UNDERSTANDING TEMPERATURE EFFECTS ON FRICTION AT TOOL – CFRP WORKPIECE INTERFACE USING OPEN-LOOP FRICTION TESTING

چکیده

Cutting processes of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) material generate significant energy in the form heat which can be detrimental to final surface and sub-surface quality. By artificially changing temperature workpiece simulate cutting temperatures, thermal effects on friction metrics understood. Feed rate CFRP pre-heating for macro nanoscale open loop pin plate testing has been completed two aerospace grade materials with steel, carbide coated pins give an insight fundamental tool wear that occurs machining.

Determination of workpiece flow stress and friction at the chip–tool contact for high-speed cutting

This paper presents a methodology to determine simultaneously (a) the flow stress at high deformation rates and temperatures that are encountered in the cutting zone, and (b) the friction at the chip–tool interface. This information is necessary to simulate high-speed machining using FEM based programs. A flow stress model based on process dependent parameters such as strain, strain-rate and te...

Sliding friction at a rubber/brush interface.

We study the friction of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) rubber network sliding, at low velocity, on a substrate on which PDMS chains are end-tethered. We thus clearly evidence the contribution to friction of the pullout mechanism of chain ends that penetrate into the network. This interfacial dissipative process is systematically investigated by probing the velocity dependence of the friction ...

Analytical Investigations of the Effects of Tool Pin Profile and Process Parameters on the Peak Temperature in Friction Stir Welding

In this work, effects of different tool pin profiles of flat and tapered shoulder geometries on the peak temperature in friction stir welding are investigated analytically. The developed models used for the analytical investigations considered the welding process as a combination or mixture of the pure sliding and the pure sticking. From the results, the amount of heat generation and the peak t...

Effects of surface disorder and temperature on atomic friction

We have investigated the effect of surface disorder on atomic friction in the stick-slip dynamical regime of a one-dimensional Prandtl-Tomlinson model. We find that disorder in the substrate potential can modify the mean slip length and then it changes the friction force of the system. In particular, the effect of the disorder is more important at low temperatures and close to dynamical transit...
